Hematology and Immunology focus on blood disorders and immune system diseases. When pets show signs of weakness, pale gums, unexplained bruising, or autoimmune reactions, I use specialized tests to uncover the problem and develop treatments that support a healthier immune response.
For both hematologic and immunologic diseases, various blood tests and imaging studies can be performed for further evaluation and diagnosis. Dogs and cats can often live good lives with these conditions, but often require long-term to lifelong medication, as most are not curable.
Veterinary Hematology
Hematology is the study of blood, blood cells, and the organs that produce them, including the bone marrow and spleen. In dogs and cats, hematology focuses on evaluating the red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma proteins that circulate through the body.
Some of the most common blood-related conditions seen in companion animals include:
- Anemia: A decrease in red blood cells. Symptoms include pale gums, weakness, and lethargy.
- Platelet and clotting Disorders: Conditions that can cause excessive bleeding or bruising.
Causes of both of these conditions may be inherited or triggered by toxins, infections, cancer or immune reactions.
Immune-Mediated Diseases in Dogs & Cats – Causes & Care
Immunology is the study of the immune system – the network of cells, tissues, and organs that protect dogs and cats from infection, cancer, and other problems. The immune system includes white blood cells, proteins and certain organs, all of which work together to recognize and neutralize harmful invaders.
Some of the most common immune disorders seen in companion animals include:
- Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA): The immune system destroys red blood cells, leading to anemia.
- Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMT): The immune system attacks platelets, causing abnormal bleeding or bruising.
- Immune-Mediated Polyarthritis (IMPA): The immune system attacks the joints, causing pain, swelling and difficulty walking.
